The first thing that will probably strike you when you see Daniel McCutchen in today’s game is his ridiculous 14.73 ERA through two starts. Obviously, McCutchen has struggled mightily this year, allowing 6 walks and 3 home runs in only 7.1 innings.
McCutchen, however, pretty clearly isn’t that bad. In 36.1 innings in the majors last season, he had a 4.21 ERA as a starter towards the end of the season. He struggled a bit with the home run ball and didn’t strike out very many batters, leading to a 5.21 FIP. Earlier in the season, though, McCutchen looked great in AAA, running a fantastic 3.79 K/BB rate, leading to a 3.24 FIP in 142 innings. It remains to be seen how he will perform as a major league pitcher, but there’s no doubt that there’s some potential there, even though at 27 years old McCutchen is a bit old to be deemed a prospect.
McCutchen has three pitches: a fastball, a slider, and a splitter. The fastball sits around 89-90, the slider at around 82-84, and the splitter around 81-83.
