We'd like to go to the Playoffs, that would be cool.

Hart Needs Knee Surgery

By on March 4, 2012

Brewers baseball began this afternoon against the San Francisco Giants, but the organization received discouraging news prior to the start of the game.

Corey Hart underwent an MRI, and it was determined that he will need surgery on his right knee to repair a meniscus tear. The Brewers’ right fielder will miss three or four weeks. That time frame will begin to nudge up against the regular season schedule, which means the 29-year-old could start the season on the disabled list for the second consecutive year.

The late scratch moved Nyjer Morgan to right field and forced Carlos Gomez to start in center field for the Sunday contest against the Giants.

If Hart begins the regular season on the disabled list, minor league outfielder Caleb Gindl will likely be the favorite to replace him on the Opening Day roster. The Brewers will be looking to replace some of Hart’s power in the lineup, and Logan Schafer simply does not provide that.

Another option is that both Brooks Conrad and Taylor Green could make the roster. That would allow Conrad to potentially play some right field, though he does not profile well at the position and would likely struggle defensively. Gindl appears to be a much better option for the organization.

Second baseman Rickie Weeks was also a late scratch due to shoulder tendinitis. His injury is not considered serious and is not expected to miss significant time in the Cactus League season. Brooks Conrad replaced him at second base and went 0-for-2 on the afternoon.

What is the role that Norichika Aoki would play if Hart starts out on the DL? Given what was paid just to negotiate a contract, I would think that he may see the field if Hart is out.
