Prospect of the Day: 2B Scooter Gennett
The 5-foot-9 second baseman turns off some scouts due to his diminutive stature, but the young man can hit. He barrels almost everything thrown his way at the plate. A good example of that is the fact that he is hitting .438 off lefties this year. As a left-handed batter, he should be expected to struggle against southpaws. Instead, he is pounding them at the plate this year. Both of his home runs have come against left-handed pitchers.
He is currently amidst a 10-game hitting streak with Huntsville, though he did break his three-game streak of collecting an extra-base hit. On Thursday evening, Gennett pounded out three hits and drove in three runs to help lead the Stars to victory. While it’s a little strange to see a short second baseman anchoring the batting order in the three-hole, Gennett can more than handle it.
With Rickie Weeks in the fold at second base through the 2014 season, the Brewers have no incentive to rush Gennett. He is only 21-years-old in Double-A and has the benefit of truly dominating each level before moving up the food chain. The organization could give him his first taste of big league action in 2013 or 2014, but do not expect him to push Rickie Weeks away from second base. Gennett still struggles with the glove and does not provide much at the plate in terms of plate discipline, so his ultimate value is rather limited.
Still, it’s comforting to know that the Brewers likely have their replacement for Rickie Weeks in the farm system, if everything continues developing as it has been for Gennett.

If only Gennett could play SS. Well they can always go after Aybar…..oh wait.
