Prospect of the Day: RHP Brian Baker
Baker is a 29-year-old right-hander, who the Brewers signed as a minor-league free agent this offseason. He spent his entire career with the Tampa Bay Rays organization prior to coming to the Brewers organization, and results coming out of spring training were encouraging in terms of strict numbers. The scouting reports, however, have never been overly impressive.
On Sunday afternoon, Baker twirled an effective five innings of scoreless of baseball. He struck out four batters in five innings, though do not expect those strikeout numbers to continue throughout the remainder of the year. His strikeout rates over the past two years in Triple-A were 6.17 K/9 and 6.54 K/9, respectively.
The right-hander should be nothing but an organizational player this year, but organizational players can make the difference in terms of minor league performance. On Sunday, Brian Baker paced the Sounds on the mound and made the Sounds’ one hit enough to come away with a victory.
