Prospect of the Day:  C Cameron Garfield (High-A Brevard County)

Since he’s been in the Brewers’ minor-league system since 2009, it’s difficult to believe Cameron Garfield is only 21-years-old. He missed some time with multiple knee injuries in 2011 and 2012, but he’s fully healthy and looking to regain some traction as a prospect. The Florida State League is statistically the most difficult run environment for hitters in all of professional baseball, and Space Coast Stadium, in particular, severely depressed right-handed power. The fact that Garfield already has eight extra-base hits (including three home runs) on the season is extremely impressive.

The Milwaukee Brewers are well-stocked at the catcher position in the big leagues with Lucroy and Maldonado. Thus, don’t expect the organization to rush Garfield through the system. They’ll allow him to prove himself at every level, and despite the power numbers thus far, room for improvement exists. He must improve his strikeout-to-walk ratio before he’s truly prepared to face more advanced pitching in Double-A. Quite the encouraging start for the young catcher, though. He’s a guy to keep an eye on throughout the minor-league season.
