Prospect of the Day:  CF Tyrone Taylor (Class-A Wisconsin)

At only 19 years old, the Brewers are being rather aggressive with their second-round pick out of Torrance, California. Taylor had some well-documented mechanical flaws in his swing prior to the MLB Draft, but reportedly worked through them last summer and dominated the Arizona League and Pioneer League before his season was cut short by a shoulder injury.

This season, he’s picked up exactly where he left off and could jump up prospect lists if this level of performance continues. He may only be hitting .270 and certainly isn’t walking much in his first eight games — I know, small sample — but it’s very encouraging that he’s showing gap power already; not to mention hitting for home-run power in the Midwest League is notable for a teenager.

Taylor has plus-athleticism and good speed in center field. He’s expected to develop into at least an average defender in center, so if his bat continues to develop and produce, the Brewers may have something special in Tyrone Taylor. Recently, Keith Law of ESPN said Taylor could be the Brewers’ best pick from the 2012 MLB Draft, and he’s showing why early this season.

Wow Nelson’s command has been outstanding in the early going, he’d be an incredible asset if he harnessed his control. Kind of sounds like another hard throwing righty the Brewers have…
