Prospect of the Day: RHP David Goforth (High-A Brevard County)
The hard-throwing righty threw his second scoreless outing of the young season on Wednesday, bouncing back nicely from a disappointing performance last week — in which he surrendered five runs (four earned) in five innings. Goforth worked into the sixth inning, but gave up a walk and a single before being replaced by right-hander Mark Williams.
Essentially every scouting report I’ve read and every talent evaluator I’ve spoken with believe Goforth is a sure-fire reliever down the road. For now, though, the Brewers keep him in the starting rotation to build up his arm strength and to also focus on developing his secondary offerings. Everyone knows he can touch the high-90s with his fastball. He must develop his curveball and cutter, as one of those must develop into a league-average offering for him to have a chance to be effective at the big-league level.
Side Note: David Goforth is from Philadelphia … but from Philadelphia, Mississippi. It has a population of 7,513 and is about an hour-and-a-half east of the capital, Jackson. I learned something.
