Prospect of the Day:  RHP Tommy Toledo

Aside from having one of the more entertaining names in the Brewers’ farm system, Toledo has some serious stuff coming out of the bullpen. He pitched for the University of Florida prior to signing with the Brewers organization. The right-hander has a bit of an injury history too, tearing his labrum in his throwing shoulder while at Florida and also needing reconstructive surgery on his face after getting smoked with a line drive in a collegiate game.

On Saturday afternoon, Toledo shut down the West Michigan Whitecaps and picked up the win, which was the Timber Rattlers’ fifth in a row. He did not surrender a single hit and struck out two over his three innings of work.

Interesting tidbit — The right-hander has yet to give up a hit to a right-handed batter all season. All of the damage against him has come off lefties. That severe platoon split is the main reason why the Brewers have kept him in the bullpen, instead of attempting to stretch him out and groom him to be a starter in the upper levels of the system. Tommy Toledo could be a player who skyrockets through the system over the next couple of seasons, especially if he can figure out how to consistently retire lefties.

There must be some mistake. Those pitching lines for Thornburg and Jungmann are ordinary, where are the innumerable strikeouts and 1-run or less allowed?

Simply not acceptable, we must trade these mortals for something better before it’s too late!
