Prospect of the Day:  OF Brock Kjeldgaard (Double-A Huntsville)

Halfway through the evening, I thought this award was going to go to right-hander Jimmy Nelson for yet another fine start. Once Brock Kjeldgaard hit a pair of bombs, though, the decision was taken out of my hands by the baseball gods.

Kjeldgaard is an immensely interesting prospect. He started his professional career as a pitcher, but after posting a 5.53 ERA in two years with Helena in rookie ball, the organization moved him to the outfield and let him mash. He made the Brewers’ 40-man roster after the 2011 season, in which he hit .270/.354/.495 with 24 home runs, but he really struggled last year and sort of fell off the radar once again.

At 6-foot-5, Brock Kjeldgaard gets plenty of leverage in his swing and can hit some tape-measure shots. He showed that power last night for the Huntsville Stars, and it turns out they needed the extra runs due to the bullpen’s poor performance. The Canada native has trouble with breaking pitches, though, and can also get busted inside, so it’s unlikely that he ever does anything more than accumulate gaudy home run numbers in the minor leagues. Still, much like hard-throwing pitchers with terrible control will always find a job, hitters with massive power and huge strikeout numbers will always find someone to take a shot. I would love to see it come together for him.
