Prospect of the Day: OF Ben McMahan
Drafted out of the University of Florida last year in the 23rd round, McMahan created some waves in the Brewers organization after hitting seven home runs in his first 39 professional games with the Helena Brewers in the Pioneer League. He ended the 2011 season with a .315/.329/.519 triple-slash line and had some folks wondering if the organization would try to move him behind the plate once more.
Fast forward to 2012, and McMahan still roams the outfield and populates the designated hitter role, as well. He has yet to enjoy quite the success he had in Helena last season, but he should be better than a .236 hitter. The 21-year-old has no discernable platoon split at this point and has done a decent job driving the baseball into the gaps at time. The home run power that shone through in 2011 has not translated into similar numbers in 2012, though it remains rather early in the year to be making any broad comments about a prospect’s overall power potential.
Still, McMahan should prove to be a useful organizational player for the Brewers. He is one of those high-character guys that every organization needs at the lower levels of the minor league farm system, and he also provides significant positional flexibility, which only helps create playing time.
