Prospect of the Day:  RHP Tyler Wagner (Class-A Wisconsin)

When the Brewers drafted Wagner out of the University of Utah last summer, he was immediately labeled a reliever due to his collegiate role. As they do with most upper-tier draft picks, however, Wagner is largely being groomed as a starting pitcher to build arm strength and to force him to further develop his secondary offerings.

In his past three outings, he’s given up three earned runs over 15.0 innings pitched — with an impressive 14-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He’s naturally struggled a bit more against lefties than righties, as he is primarily fastball/slider, but he’s been holding his own for the most part. It will be interesting to see how quickly he’s transitioned to the bullpen. Most likely, he follows the same path as David Goforth, who continues to start for High-A Brevard County this year.

Wagner receives the Prospect of the Day (POTD) because it was largely a unexciting day on the farm, and he paired a zero-earned-run outing with a stellar strikeout-to-walk ratio. Limiting the earned runs is obviously nice. The real excitement for pitching prospects, however, comes from the process. It comes from the peripherals. And on Thursday evening, Tyler Wagner was essentially perfect with a 6-to-0 strikeout-to-walk ratio. T-Rats’ play-by-play man Chris Mehring had him unofficially at 82 pitches, 60 strikes through six innings. That’s excellent.
