Prospect of the Day:  RHP Ariel Pena (Double-A Huntsville)

For the second time in as many starts, right-hander Ariel Pena threw the baseball very well for Double-A Huntsville. He was cruising before running into a bit of trouble in the sixth inning. Overall, he struck out five batters in just over five innings, walking only one. It was yet another step in the right direction for Pena, who’s still out to prove to his new organization that he’s a legitimate starting pitching prospect.

Pena sat 92-93 mph with the fastball on Monday night, touching 95 mph. He was mostly fastball/slider, though, as he didn’t feature more than a handful of changeups. It’s that fastball/slider combination that leaves many scouts feeling he’s more of a relief prospect down the road. Very, very few starters can get by without a legitimate third pitch.

The good news for Pena and Brewers fans: his walk totals remained low for his second-consecutive start. He has a 30-to-23 strikeout-to-walk ratio on the season, but in his last 11.1 innings, he’s only walked three batters. Again, that’s a step in the right direction — nevermind the 15 strikeouts in that same time frame.
