Prospect of the Day:  OF Caleb Gindl (Triple-A Nashville)

Gindl may have not enjoyed the best statistical day in the Brewers’ farm system, but I wanted to use this space to highlight his improvement in recent weeks. In 14 games this month, he’s hitting .294/.383/.451 with five extra-base hits. The 5-foot-7 outfielder is still trying to prove he fits in the Brewers’ major-league plans, and his recent performance could put him back in the discussion if the Brewers want a fifth outfielder once more.

At the same time, it’s becoming more apparent that Gindl is probably going to struggle at the major-league level. His strikeout rate has ballooned once again — 38 strikeouts in 37 games — and he’s really struggled against left-handed pitching. A high strikeout rate isn’t necessarily a death sentence. When it starts to significantly impact the hit-tool, however, it’s a problem. So, at best, it seems we’re talking a platoon outfielder with strikeout issues and fringy power.

It’s not out of the realm of possibility that Gindl improves and does stick in the majors for a couple years. After all, he’s only 24 years old. It’s just looking less and less probable every season.
