Prospect of the Day:  RHP Jesus Sanchez

Sanchez originally signed with the New York Yankees out of Valencia, Venezuela. He was sent to Philadelphia in the Bobby Abreu trade in 2006, though at that time, Sanchez was a catch-and-throw catcher who struggled to hit consistently. Then, in 2008, the Phillies moved him to the mound, where he opened some eyes and put together back-to-back solid seasons in 2009 and 2010 before the Phillies released him.

He then signed with the Brewers and was extremely pedestrian at Double-A Huntsville. The Brewers moved him to the bullpen this year, where the right-hander has flourished, especially against right-handed batters. He has held righties to a .175 batting average and has a 21-to-5 strikeout-to-walk ratio against righties. His success against lefties has been suspect — despite the .159 batting average against — due to a 4-to-4 strikeout to walk ratio.

It seems Sanchez has finally found his role as a pitcher. He continues to learn how to pitch and has a relatively young arm in terms of innings pitched, which indicates that he could still have some upside remaining in that arm. Looking at his statistics, though, it appears that he may be limited in effectiveness out of the bullpen. Many minor league relievers have overwhelming platoon splits, and although he has limited the batting average to both lefties and righties, the underlying peripherals suggest lefties give him much more trouble than it appears at first glance.
