Prospect of the Day: C Shawn Zarraga
Zarraga is an extremely interesting prospect. The Brewers drafted him as a prep catcher out of Florida in the 44th round of the 2007 Draft, but the 23-year-old is originally from Aruba in the Caribbean. He has always been able to hit the baseball. In his senior year of high school, he reportedly hit .714 in 23 games. This year, Zarraga is flirting with the .300 mark in his third year with Brevard County.
The reason Shawn Zarraga has never been considered a legitimate prospect is two-fold: (1) the body is simply not very good, and (2) he does not for much power at all. It’s a bit of an empty batting average in many ways. In 2011, for example, he only collected 14 extra-base hits all season in 69 games. The previous season, he only had 16 extra-base hits in 74 games. In 2009, he only managed three extra-base hits in 52 games. At 260-pounds and with little-to-no speed of which to speak, Zarraga has to bring something else to the table other than singles, which he has historically not done throughout his professional career.
Power traditionally develops late for prospects, however, especially prep prospects. Perhaps he is simply beginning to tap into some power in his swing. After all, he does have four extra-base hits in his last three games.
