Prospect of the Day: RHP Drew Gagnon
Sunday’s outing marked a welcome bounceback performance after a string of starts that ranged from mediocre to poor. He had surrendered a combined 16 runs in his previous four starts and had begun dishing out free passes, which is something he avoided early in the year.
On Sunday, however, the 21-year-old starter limited both the runs scored and the walks. It will be interesting to see if he gets a call to Brevard County, much like Tyler Thornburg did a year ago, or if he will be treated more like Jimmy Nelson and work the entire year in Class-A prior to getting the call to the Florida State League. The difference, however, is that Nelson struggled to begin the year and really improved throughout the summer, while Gagnon already has the numbers to warrant a promotion to High-A.
My guess is Gagnon finds his way to Brevard County when Jimmy Nelson garners a promotion to Double-A Huntsville after the midpoint in the minor league season. No guarantees, but Gagnon is a collegiate pitcher who should find success against younger Midwest League talent. He should face a higher-caliber hitter. It will be interesting to see if the organization feels the same way in a few weeks.
