Prospect of the Day:  RHP Johnny Hellweg (Triple-A Nashville)

As mentioned multiple times in the past few months, Hellweg is one of the rare 24-year-old pitchers in Triple-A who is still considered a raw project. He’s still learning how to pitch and how to utilize his massive 6-foot-9 frame on the mound — as repeating mechanics with such lengthy levers is very difficult to do. That’s much of the reason why he struggles with his command from time-to-time and why the right-hander can suddenly “lose it” during a start.

That’s why his outing on Thursday evening was such a positive sign. Sure, he threw seven scoreless innings. That’s wonderful. But the real story was that he got into a bases-loaded pinch in the sixth inning after walking the bases full, and he escaped unscathed. Furthermore, he pitched another scoreless inning afterward. Instead of allowing some mechanical troubles to derail him — as has happened in previous starts — he fought through it and kept the opposing team off the scoreboard.

In his last three starts, he’s only given up two earned runs in 20 innings. His strikeout-to-walk ratio hasn’t been phenomenal, but he’s beginning to limit his walks and allowing his plus stuff to dominate hitters. On the year, opposing teams are only hitting .192 off him. That’s ridiculous. It’s looking more and more like he’s going to get a chance to come to the big leagues as a starter — though it probably won’t be until September (at the earliest). It will still be an uphill climb to stick as a starter, but it’s looking like he’s going to earn the chance to try.
