Prospect of the Day: RHP Drew Gagnon
Coming from a collegiate program such as Cal State Long Beach — yes, that means he’s a Dirtbag — Gagnon was expected to find success against largely younger talent in the Midwest League. He has not disappointed. With a 2.66 ERA in 12 starts, he leads the starting rotation in ERA (2.66), innings pitched (71.0), strikeouts (57), and WHIP (1.01).
Gagnon throws in the low-90s with his fastball, but it’s his changeup that allows him to find success against both left-handed and right-handed hitters. Lefties are hitting .218 against Gagnon this season. Righties are hitting an almost identical .217. That lack of platoon split is always greatly desired when discussing a starting pitching prospect.
The 21-year-old has a chance to be a back-end starter at the big league level, if he continues to develop his repertoire and hone his command. At 6-foot-4 and 195 pounds, he possesses the body type the organization covets, too. If Milwaukee decides to push Jimmy Nelson to Double-A this summer, expect Gagnon to get the call to the Florida State League as a reward for his quality work for the Timber Rattlers.
