Prospect of the Day:  RHP Johnny Hellweg (Triple-A Nashville)

The 6-foot-9 right-hander has a 1.00 ERA in his last four starts. He’s thrown seven innings in each of his last three starts, and he’s lowered his season ERA to 3.06 in one of the most difficult pitching environments in all of the minor leagues.

As with most things, though, there are underlying concerns. One glaring concern is that Hellweg is showing a pretty substantial platoon split:

AVG BB K
vs. LHH .273 30 23
vs. RHH .125 14 25

Yes, the right-hander is putting up stellar numbers, but he has plenty to work on in Triple-A. No need to rush him to the big leagues, especially in the midst of what appears to be a down season. Allow him to continue his development in Nashville, call him up in September to see what you have, and give him a shot to make the rotation next spring.

For Hellweg’s platoon splits, don’t think you meant vs. LH and RH pitchers. Wonder why he’s walking so many lefties? Love these minor league updates, by the way

Ugh. It’s been fixed. Thanks for the catch.

So Jim, in your mind– Hellwig, Nelson, Jungmann— Any of them potential #2′s? Or are we talking back end only with these guys? Thanks.

Hellweg could absolutely be a number-two starter. He’s just a ways from reaching that potential. As far as the rest, they appear to have mid to back-end starter upside.
