Prospect of the Day:  LHP Zach Kroenke (Triple-A Nashville)

Kroenke signed with the Brewers as a minor-league free agent this winter. He made two brief appearances in the majors with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2010 and 2011, but he’s mostly bounced around in Triple-A for the last six seasons with the Yankees, Diamondbacks and Brewers.

The minor-league veteran gave the Sounds a wonderful pitching performance on Monday evening, tossing six-scoreless innings and picking up the win. He’s primarily a fastball-changeup pitcher. He can occasionally bump 90-91 mph with the fastball, but he sits in the upper-80s — especially as a starter. It’s the fastball-changeup combination that actually gives him a reverse-platoon split on the mound. He performs better against right-handed batters than he does lefties, and that’s not overly uncommon. Shaun Marcum is a great example of a changeup-specialist who enjoyed slightly more success against opposite-handed hitting.

Kroenke is not knocking at the door of the big leagues any time soon, though. The Brewers have a slew of arms in Triple-A who could make their major-league debuts in August or September, so it seems unlikely that Kroenke will be anything more than a swingman for the Nashville Sounds the remainder of the season.
