Prospect of the Day:  RHP Tyler Thornburg (Triple-A Nashville)

It’s been an up-and-down year for Tyler Thornburg. He’s racking up the strikeouts (77 Ks in 69 IP) and limiting the walks, but he also owns a 5.74 ERA on the year. His struggles have stemmed from an inability to consistently work down in the strike zone. He can generate good angles with his fastball — despite his diminutive stature — because of his quirky mechanics, but he has to spot his fastball down in the zone to make it effective. If he doesn’t, his fastball straightens out and becomes very hittable.

On Wednesday evening, the dominant Tyler Thornburg showed up for Nashville. He surrendered an unearned run, but he limited the Iowa Cubs to just five hits in six innings and struck out seven. It marked back-to-back strong outings for Thornburg. He once again showed that he has the arsenal to start. However, he needs to sharpen his command and become more consistent with his mechanics. If he’s unable to do that this year and into big-league camp next spring, he’ll likely be transitioned to the bullpen. The organization, though, wants to give him every chance to stick in the rotation — and for good reason.

Watched Thornburg live last night, the fastball was good and crisp (albeit not higher than 93 PMH) until he started to lose a little velocity on it in the 5th, which is not encouraging. Also he was completely unable to locate his changeup for a strike against a lefty dominated Iowa Cubs lineup…also not a very encouraging sign.
