Prospect of the Day:  RHP Chad Pierce (High-A Brevard County)

Milwaukee drafted Pierce out of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the 2011 Draft, so he’s already well-known to much of the fanbase and local reporters. He also compiled a 3.47 ERA in 124.2 innings with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers last year, striking out 115 batters and holding opposing hitters to a .239 batting average.

He’s carried over much of that success to this season, though he’s done most of his work out of the bullpen. After a strong performance on Sunday for the Manatees, Pierce has only allowed three earned runs in his last 22.2 innings. He’s struck out 72 batters in 63.2 innings this year and has shown some interesting platoon splits, as he’s actually found more success against lefties than he has right-handed batters. Those are the types of numbers that make one hope he can develop into a solid middle reliever down the road — especially if his fastball velocity is still hovering around 91-92 mph, as it was in college — and considering the Brewers drafted him in the 38th round, becoming a middle reliever is not bad value whatsoever.

Do you have any information on D’Vontrey coming back?

    • J.P. Breen says: July 8, 2013

All I’ve read is that D’Vo decided to re-commit to baseball and the organization decided to take him back. Last year, he wasn’t enjoying the grind of minor-league baseball anymore and wanted to finish his degree.

So much for Michael Olmstead and his darkhorse status.

But on the plus side…..Heckathorn?? Why not…I say let him and Jesus Sanchez get some bullpen innings in as they trade away Gorzelanny and K-Rod.
