Prospect of the Day:  1B Hunter Morris

Despite the monstrous offensive performance from the AZL Brewers on Saturday evening — especially Tyrone Taylor and Jose Pena — the Prospect of the Day has to go to power-hitting first baseman Hunter Morris. He finished the weekend by going 5-for-9 at the plate with two triples and three home runs. In fact, he has launched four home runs in his last three games, raising his season total to 14.

The first baseman was seen as a bit of a long-shot coming into the season. He has always shown raw power, but it’s utility in game situations was somewhat questionable, and his plate discipline left a lot to be desired. This season, however, he has worn out the gaps with 27 doubles and now has 14 home runs halfway through the minor league season. Even better, his walk rate has improved.

Now, Morris will never be a player who compiles impressive walk rates — or even league-average walk rates, most likely. If he can translate his 6.3% walk rate to Triple-A (and beyond), the Brewers may have a legitimate first base prospect in Morris. The 23-year-old still has places to improve and development to still undergo, but his big league projection looks far rosier on July 9, 2012 than it did prior to the season. Much, much rosier.

Look for the Brewers to send Morris to the Arizona Fall League to continue his development after the season.

Well, that didn’t take long– Taylor has been promoted to Helena. Look at the group of OF’s we have there, wow. That’s a ton of talent.

I’d like to apologize to Brewer fans AND to Eric Arnett: I got hopeful about him a few days ago and was talking him up to a friend at work. No good deed goes unpunished, and he promptly reverted.

    Sorry…
