Prospect of the Day: SS Carlos Belonis
Belonis was the Brewers’ prized international signee in 2011, agreeing to a $550,000 signing bonus in November. He is 6-foot-3 and extremely wiry at this point in his career. The organization likes his ability to square up the baseball and use his above-average speed on the basepaths, but Baseball America talked about how his larger frame may cause him to move off shortstop down the road.
His father apparently played in the majors with the San Francisco Giants in 1990, so the baseball pedigree is certainly there.
On Tuesday afternoon, the young shortstop went 4-for-6 with four singles and four stolen bases. Aside from the grand slam from Alejandro Mendoza in Game 2 of the double-header, the DSL Brewers did relatively nothing at the plate. Belonis was really the one who did enough to be named Prospect of the Day — though Eliezer Montano certainly gave it a shot with his five scoreless innings.

Have the Brewers been active in the international market at all this year? Haven’t heard anything yet…
Not that I have seen. They didn’t make their splash in the international market — Carlos Belonis — until November of last year.
