Prospect of the Day:  OF Jose Pena (Helena Brewers)

Prior to the season, I was chatting with someone in the industry, and he was telling me that he liked Pena. He liked the power. He liked the defensive profile in right field with an above-average arm. He was concerned, though, that his overaggressive approach at the plate would begin to be exploited in full-season ball and a lot had to fall into place for him to be a big leaguer. Pena didn’t get promoted to Class-A Wisconsin this year, but he’s certainly experienced his fair share of struggles regardless.

Despite that slow start, Pena put on a show for Helena on Sunday afternoon. He went 3-for-4 with three doubles, four RBI and two runs scored. Over his last ten games, he’s hitting .282/.378/.487 and appears to be turning it around. My favorite part about Pena’s season: 15 of his 24 hits have been for extra-bases.

Gotta love Helena’s 1-2-3 at the top of the order:
    1. Garcia .324 BA .397 OBP
    2. Orf .328 BA .494 OBP (yup, .494)
    3. Ratterree .353 BA .431 OBP

BTW–here’s a link to Jim’s interview in Florida last week. Well done, Jim!

Goforth pitched in relief… Is there a reason I shouldn’t be wondering why?
