Prospect of the Day:  RHP Johnny Hellweg (Triple-A Nashville)

The right-hander may not have the most aesthetically pleasing box score, but he only allowed nine baserunners in six innings (two HBP). He did what he’s done most of the season in Triple-A. He’s been a little wild, but he’s erased his mistakes through double plays and ground balls. That’s what happened on Tuesday night, as well.

As we’ve seen at the big-league level, Hellweg must tighten up his command to be successful. He still generated a lot of ground-ball contact (62.0% GB) when he was in the majors, but the Brewers’ porous infield defense really hurt him. It was a bad combination. Walks and below-average defense don’t generally mix well for the pitcher, and it resulted in a 10.97 ERA for Hellweg. He can’t do anything about the infield defense. He can, however, work at reining in his command and repeating his delivery. If he can show improvement in both of those areas, he’ll have a chance to find success in his next big-league stint.

I don’t know if it was ever posted before, but when/why did D’Vontrey Richardson come back? I thought it was always a pretty confusing situation with his quitting or taking an extended leave of absence. Also, where does that put him as a prospect?

If Hellwig can somehow control his walks he has the making of a 3-4 rotation guy

looking at the standings the whole system has been kinda a failure
