Prospect of the Day:  C Clint Coulter

The first couple of weeks after a recent draftee makes his professional debut is often when many fans craft an opinion of a player. My twitter feed was flooded with questions about collegiate outfielder Lance Roenicke when he got off to a hot start in Helena and was promoted to Appleton to join the Timber Rattlers. His hot start had many asking if he was someone to get excited about.

A 24-year-old outfielder drafted in the 25th-round, who is currently taking advantage of younger players in the lower minors? No, that’s not something to get excited about.

Minor league statistics are dangerous. Not every player with gaudy numbers can translate that into success at the higher levels of the minors — and even fewer can do that at the major league level. Myriads of players have dominated the low levels of a system and flamed out when reaching Double-A or Triple-A. The statistics can help us better discuss a player’s abilities when paired with scouting reports and projection. Basing opinions on minor league players solely on numbers will very often lead people down the incorrect path.

Take Clint Coulter, for example. The Milwaukee Brewers drafted him with their first overall selection in the 2012 Draft. Different draft experts hyped up his bat, and we discussed his power potential at length on this blog. He struggled in his debut, though. In his first six games, he hit only .136 — which ultimately led to an influx of question regarding his “disappointing” start to his professional career.

Fast forward approximately a month, and Clint Coulter is performing rather well for the AZL Brewers. He went 3-for-5 with two doubles on Monday evening and has compiled a .484/.590/.871 slash line over his last ten games. His batting average now sits at .313, and his .432 on-base percentage reflects the quality plate discipline that was lauded by scouts prior to the draft.

Such is life in baseball. Every player will experience hot and cold stretches. Truly evaluating prospects means understanding the core skills that lie underneath the numbers and not getting overly excited about any two or three week stretch at the plate.

do you guys know what happened to tyrone taylor? Haven’t seen anywhere that he was injured, but he hasn’t played in a long time…

The last I heard had Taylor heading back to AZ to rehab an arm injury, though that was several weeks ago.

Apparently they weren’t joking about Hellweg’s control issues. 7 walks? Even Nelson, Rogers and Peralta would be shamed! Impressive he still only gave up the 3 ER, considering.
