Prospect of the Day:  RHP Damien Magnifico

Wednesday night marked Magnifico’s best professional outing of his career, throwing four scoreless and striking out five. He has predictably overpowered younger players in the Pioneer League. The right-hander has struck out twelve batters in just 11.1 innings — though it should be noted that he has walked five in that same time frame.

Everyone who followed the 2012 Draft knows that Magnifico has a fastball that regularly touches triple-digits. The key will be developing a usable offspeed pitch to complement that potentially plus plus fastball, which is why you could see Magnifico pitch multiple inning stints in the minors and ultimately become a reliever at the big league level.

As constantly mentioned immediately following the draft in June, the Brewers drafted someone with a special fastball and are hoping they can teach him to pitch. Unfortunately, the Pioneer League does not provide much of a barometer in terms of future success. The 2013 season in Appleton will be a much better test.

Still, it’s nice to see him come out an chuck up zeroes in Helena. Very solid performance on Wednesday evening from the former Oklahoma Sooner.

Magnifico needs to succeed for the same reason Tommy Toledo does. There’s a lack of really great names on this roster and these guys could give it a real shot in the arm. Apologies to Maverick Lasker.
