Prospect of the Day:  RHP Leonard Lorenzo

Instead of his abilities on the mound, the 21-year-old Dominican Republic native is perhaps best known for his 50-game drug suspension in 2010. He tested positive for a metabolite of Boldenone and served his suspension before returning to action and compiling a very solid year in the Dominican Summer League in 2011 for the DSL Brewers, highlighted by a 2.13 ERA and a .197 opponent batting average.

Of course, statistics in the Dominican Summer League must be taken with several large grains of salt. It was encouraging to see the organization push Lorenzo to the Pioneer League. He has struggled at times — his previous start saw him surrender six earned runs in only five innings — but he can also toss a beauty from time to time.

He did that on Thursday evening, striking out twelve batters in only six innings. In fact, eight of his first nine outs recorded came via the strikeout. It was quite the evening for Lorenzo in Helena. Unfortunately, the rest of the team couldn’t pick him up and score enough runs to put the team on the winning column.

Wow, 12 K’s in 6 IP is really impressive. What’s the scouting report on this kid? Hard thrower, junkballer, etc?

Where does Lorenzo rank on great baseball names within the system?
