Prospect of the Day:  OF Brandon Diaz (AZL Brewers)

The Brewers drafted Diaz in the eighth round of the ’13 Draft. He attended American Heritage High School in Florida, which is well-known for being a powerhouse prep program. While Diaz was more known for his speed than his bat, he’s holding his own in the Arizona League this summer. He’s hitting .250/.367/.427 with five doubles, four triples and three home runs. The young man has also stolen 15 bases and scored 26 runs.

At only 5-foot-11, it will likely be an uphill battle with the bat as he progresses through the minor-league system. However, the Brewers drafted an athlete in center field with a solid baseball background, hoping his bat will develop enough to support his center field profile. It’s obviously too early to say anything definitive about the 18-year-old, but he’s been a decent surprise in the lower levels. With that said, I wouldn’t expect to see him on any top prospect lists in the near future.

What’s up with Austin Ross? Wasn’t he a somewhat promising prospect a couple of years ago.

He had a good year in Class-A w/ the Timber Rattlers, but he had TJ surgery last year.
