Prospect of the Day:  OF Jose Pena (Helena Brewers)

After hitting .302/.345/.528 with 13 doubles, 10 triples and eight home runs last season in the Arizona League and Pioneer League, expectations were rather high for the power-hitting corner outfielder. He’s struggled to reproduce the high batting average, but the power has proven to be legitimate. Through just 42 games, Pena already has 14 doubles and six home runs — including his tremendous 4-for-5 outing on Sunday with three doubles and a home run. His walk rate has taken a step forward, but it will be interesting to see how he acclimates to full-season ball next year.

Prior to the season, I talked to a contact about Jose Pena. The contact mentioned he was a prototypical right field prospect — big, powerful, good arm — but he was concerned his over-aggressive approach would be exploited in the Midwest League. It turns out his approach may have been exploited with another go-round in the Pioneer League. At only 20 years old, though, no one is throwing in the towel on a bat with that kind of power potential.

Have they been letting Micah Owings play in the field at all?
