Prospect of the Day: OF Jose Pena
Statistically, the award should have gone to Juan Sanchez or Taylor Smith-Brennan, but after his second home run in his first four games with the Helena Brewers, I preferred to discuss outfielder Jose Pena.
The 19-year-old Dominican outfielder cranked out 21 extra-base hits in only 40 games in the Arizona League, earning a mid-season promotion to the Pioneer League — which tends to feature older players coming out of college. It stood to be a solid test for the young man, who seemingly emerged out of nowhere following two dismal seasons in the Dominican Summer League.
Pena signed for $400,000 back in 2009. Here is some video of him at 16 years old:

The bat speed certainly jumps out at first glance. It appears the young man is starting to translate that raw power into game-useable power. I haven’t talked to a scout who has seen Pena play this summer, though, so I’m considering myself cautiously optimistic regarding the young outfield prospect.

Clint Coulter’s stat line looks like a bad relief outing. Not sure what that even means.
He has walked a ton though so far.
Were they playing slow-pitch softball in Clearwater?
