Prospect of the Day:  2B Chris McFarland

When the Brewers lured McFarland away from Rice University with a $315,000 signing bonus as an 18th-round pick, the organization had high hopes for his future. He has not disappointed this year with Helena, hitting .300/.356/.424 in his first 60 games as a professional. That included a big night on Thursday in which he went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a home run — his fifth home run of the year, and his third within his last ten games.

A statistical oddity about McFarland this year:

vs. LHP:  .217/.309/.267
vs. RHP:  .328/.372/.475

Most right-handed hitters, especially young right-handed hitters, feast on left-handed pitching and struggle with the righties. That has obviously not proven true for McFarland. He has absolutely lit up righties, while southpaws have carved him up. I might take this as good news, however, because I do not expect hitting lefties to be an issue as he progresses and the fact that he’s already seeing same-handed pitching so well is a positive sign.

Just a nice, solid performance for a 19-year-old in his first professional season.
