Prospect of the Day:  3B Stephen Parker (Triple-A Nashville)

The 25-year-old third baseman went 3-for-5 on Sunday evening and was only one leg short of hitting for the cycle. He doubled in the fifth inning, homered to center in the sixth inning and tripled in the seventh inning. Then, he had the perfect opportunity to collect that elusive single in the ninth inning, but he harmlessly flew out to left fielder Nick Buss of the Albuquerque Isotopes.

In March, the Brewers traded minor-league pitcher Darren Byrd to Oakland for Parker. He had hit really well in High-A and Double-A for the Athletics in 2010 and 2011, but after struggling to adjust to the Pacific Coast League in 2012, he lost most of his fringe-prospect luster. Since then, his stock has fallen even further, as he’s only hitting .218/.308/.340 in 117 games this year. No matter which way you slice it, a .648 OPS from a corner infielder in the hitter-friendly PCL will simply not cut it.

On Sunday evening, though, Parker compiled a stellar outing and almost carved out a little piece of Nashville Sounds’ history for himself in the process. Unfortunately, he was unable to collect a single in the ninth inning and fell just short of the cycle.

hey, I just noticed something in the Manatees box score regarding Eric Arnett’s ERA. Is this some fluke from a small sample size or has he FINALLY started to turn the corner on his professional career?

He’s pitched 11 innings in high A ball in his 5th season as a pro. I’d limit expectations.
