Prospect of the Day:  RHP Jimmy Nelson

First of all, it was a tremendous day for Brewers pitchers down on the farm. Tyler Thornburg, Drew Gagnon, Nick Bucci, and David Goforth all threw the ball extremely well. Nobody threw it better than Jimmy Nelson, though, who tossed seven one-hit innings for Double-A Huntsville.

Nelson has struggled with the transition to Double-A. His walk rate has shot up, as he has walked 37 batters in only 46 innings after walking only 25 in 81.1 innings with High-A Brevard County. That has been the biggest culprit for Nelson’s struggles — though he has only walked four batters in his last 13 innings, while striking out ten.

Scouts have raved about Nelson all season. He’s thrown 94-96 MPH with sink and featured a true two-plane slider as his wipeout pitch. He also has a changeup, but he will need to rely on that pitch more frequently as he progresses up the Brewers’ system. It is a pitch that will help him neutralize left-handed batters, who have averaged 62-points better (.240 AVG) against him than have right-handed batters (.178 AVG) in Huntsville.
