Prospect of the Day: OF Jose Pena
In 53 games between the AZL Brewers and Helena Brewers, Pena has collected 67 hits. Of those 67 hits, 29 of them have gone for extra bases — 13 doubles, 8 triples, and 8 home runs — which correlates to an ISO above .200 for the year. Now, basing opinions purely off statistics in the rookie leagues is always dangerous, but Pena was signed for $400,000 out of the Dominican Republic due to his raw power potential. These numbers appear to be a manifestation of that power in game action.
Pena is the number one player I’m looking forward to seeing at Brewers camp next spring, as I have not gotten a look at his game myself. I’ve only seen video footage. If his performance this year is of any indication, though, the Brewers may have themselves a legitimate power-hitting prospect in the lower levels of their system.
