If you take a look at the sidebar on the right, you’ll see a poll. I want to know who you guys think is the better defensive center fielder, Jim Edmonds or Carlos Gomez. Voting will be open for a couple days. I’m very interested to see how this one turns out.

To this point, Carlos Gomez is as over-rated a defender in CF as Escobar is as SS. Gomez has great tools (just ask Morticia) but even with his speed and arm, he takes poor angles, gets mediocre breaks and regularly makes odd decisions. Edmonds is clearly the better CF, at least right now.
Gomez has the better range, easily. He doesn’t make catches that look as sharp as Edmonds’ because he doesn’t lay out when it’s unnecessary.
Edmonds may be better at taking initial routes, but he doesn’t have the speed to make up for mistakes and cover the gaps as well as Gomez seems to. A good example is the play he made Monday night that likely saved the Brewers a couple runs. Edmonds likely doesn’t make that play. Edmonds is good for a highlight reel catch every so often, but like Justin said, a lot of times he makes the dive when it isn’t necessary. Gomez has the speed to make those plays standing up.
A sabermetric nightmare, intangibles.
