The Brewers have, apparently intentionally, signed Yuniesky Betancourt to a Major League deal. After struggling to find words, I’m just going to do this.
At first, I was like
Then, I was like
Now, it’s more like
Truthfully, Betancourt (most likely) won’t play much. This was a move that likely coincides with Taylor Green starting the year on the DL and Jeff Bianchi continuing to struggle with a hip problem. With Alex Gonzalez getting most of the reps at first base, they needed somebody on the bench they could point to and say, “hey, he’s played shortstop before.” And as J.P. pointed out on Twitter, Yuni’s probably the one to go once Corey Hart is ready to return.
But it isn’t the move itself that’s an issue for most people here. It’s just the idea of having Yuni on the roster again. The Brewers could have literally chosen anyone else of similar…uh…talent, and the reaction wouldn’t have been nearly as vitriolic.
Of course, stuff like this…
…tends to stick with you.
